Portodemouros Ferry

Encoro de Portodemouros, San Tomé de Insua
Category Reservoir / Lake

The Portodemouros Ferry is one of the most unique features in inland Galicia: it is the only river ferry in operation in the region. It is located on the Portodemouros Reservoir, between the municipalities of Vila de Cruces (Pontevedra) and Arzúa (A Coruña), and crosses the waters of the River Ulla, connecting the two provinces. Its origins date back to the 1970s, when it began operating as a means of transport to connect the villages separated by the construction of the reservoir, making it easier for people and vehicles to cross between both banks.

Over time, this practical service has become a major tourist attraction, both for its uniqueness and for the beauty of the surrounding natural landscape. The journey, although short, offers visitors a different experience, crossing the calm waters of the Ulla while contemplating the landscapes of the valley and the nearby mountains.

Today, the Portodemouros Ferry symbolises the union between past and present: between rural Galicia, which once depended on this means of transport for communication, and modern Galicia, which values it as part of its cultural and tourist heritage. In addition to its practical function, it represents an authentic way of discovering the territory and its recent history, inviting visitors to explore the surroundings of the reservoir from a different perspective: on the very river that gave rise to it.
