Church of San Pedro de Toedo

Category Church

The Parish Church of San Pedro de Toedo stands in the parish of Toedo, within the municipality of A Estrada, as a testimony to the rural and religious life of this area. The building, with documentary references dating back to before the 18th century, served as the spiritual centre of the local community for centuries. According to historical testimonies preserved in traditional sources, the temple and its parish community were closely linked to the agricultural and livestock-based life of Toedo, reflecting the traditional organisation of rural Galician parishes.

The current temple, although modified by later reforms, still preserves part of its traditional structure and architectural elements characteristic of Galician parish heritage. The main façade features a lintelled doorway with mouldings, above which rises a central bell gable with two openings, elements frequently found in rural churches that have been remodelled in different historical periods. The apse, narrower than the nave and of the same height, completes the building and reflects the typical layout of a parish church. These features allow visitors to easily recognise the model of parish church that has shaped the Galician rural landscape for centuries. In 2002, the altarpiece was restored, recovering its original structure.

The Church of San Pedro de Toedo is also located along the route of the Camiño da Geira e dos Arrieiros, one of the Jacobean routes that connects Braga (Portugal) with Santiago de Compostela and crosses the municipality of A Estrada on its stage between Codeseda and Pontevea. Altogether, the church of San Pedro de Toedo represents a good example of rural religious heritage linked to historic routes, where parish life, the Jacobean tradition and the landscape of inland Galicia intertwine.
