The Church of San Salvador de Caamanzo, located in the municipality of Vila de Cruces, is one of the most notable Romanesque churches in the Deza region and a living testimony to the splendour of medieval Galician monasticism. Its origins date back to the 10th century, when the Counts of Deza, Don Gonzalo and Doña Teresa, founded a Benedictine monastery on the site of an ancient pre-Romanesque church. These same nobles also promoted the creation of the nearby Monastery of San Lourenzo de Carboeiro, with which Caamanzo shares historical and stylistic links.

The current church was built in 1166, coinciding with the heyday of the monastery and Romanesque art in Galicia. At that time, the monastery was home to a community of monks, later replaced by Benedictine nuns, and enjoyed great importance, even receiving donations from Queen Urraca. In the 16th century, in 1516, the institution was incorporated into the Monastery of San Paio de Antealtares in Santiago de Compostela. Today, only a few architectural remains of the old monastery are preserved, such as the arcade of the chapter house, but the monastic church is in excellent condition.

The temple retains its original basilica layout, with three naves and three apses, and features a rich sculptural decoration. Its main door, with semicircular archivolts, features figures of angels with open arms and Christ the Saviour blessing in the tympanum. The side door, which gave access to the monastic quarters, is crowned by a sculpted Agnus Dei, an example of the purity and sobriety of Galician Romanesque art. On the lintel of the portico on the south wall, there is an inscription commemorating its reconstruction between 1166 and 1204, material evidence of the survival of its history.

Today, San Salvador de Camanzo is a place of great historical, artistic and spiritual value, combining the serenity of the rural environment, the imprint of its monastic past and the mastery of Galician Romanesque art. It is an essential visit for those who wish to understand the medieval legacy of the Deza region and the influence of Compostela on the religious architecture of Galicia.
