Hermitage of Las Angustias

Seixo, A Estrada
Category Sanctuary / Hermitage

The hermitage of Las Angustias, located in the place of Seixo, in the parish of San Miguel de Castro (A Estrada), is a small temple integrated into the local religious heritage. Founded in 1707 by Miguel Reimóndez, it was originally dedicated to the Apostle James. This building is part of the group of heritage elements linked to the Camino de Santiago that passes through the municipality, which reinforces its historical and cultural value.

It has a simple structure, consisting of a single storey, masonry walls and a gabled roof. The chapel has a rectangular plan, and inside, the vaulted ceilings and the main altarpiece stand out. Its niche, finished to imitate marble, is presided over by the image of the Virgin of Las Angustias.

Over time, the temple underwent several restorations, although it preserves original elements of great interest, such as its 18th-century façade and a bell gable added in the 19th century. It also belongs to the archpriesthood of Ribadulla, being the only chapel in the municipality of A Estrada with this distinction. Due to its history, simple architecture and connection with the Camino de Santiago, the chapel forms part of the cultural heritage that accompanies travellers along their journey through these lands of A Estrada.
