Category Monastery

The Monastery of San Lourenzo de Carboeiro, located in the parish of Santa María de Carboeiro, on the banks of the Deza River, is one of the great jewels of Galician Romanesque architecture and a remarkable example of the transition towards the Gothic style. Founded in 936 by the counts Gonzalo Betote and Tareixa Eiriz on land previously occupied by a hermit named Egica, the monastery soon became an important religious centre under the protection of King Ramiro I of León. The church, built on a Latin cross plan, features three naves, a transept and a chevet with three radial apses. Notable architectural elements inspired by the Romanesque style of Santiago de Compostela include the vegetal decoration of the capitals, the crypt beneath the chancel, created due to the slope of the terrain, and the main portal with the twenty-three Elders of the Apocalypse, which reflects the influence of Master Mateo and the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the monastery reached its period of greatest splendour under the leadership of Abbot Froila and later Abbot Fernando, who expanded the church between 1162 and 1192. At that time, Carboeiro enjoyed considerable economic and social power and belonged to the Order of Cluny, establishing itself as one of the most important abbeys in Galicia. The monastery’s wealth was reflected both in its extensive properties and in the quality of its architecture, which combines the expressive strength of Romanesque forms with the first influences of the Gothic style. From the 16th century onwards, a long period of decline began, marked by internal conflicts and unfavourable management, culminating in the monastery’s relegation to a priory in 1500 by order of the Catholic Monarchs. It was later used as a place of confinement for monks in 1794 and finally abandoned following the Mendizábal confiscations in 1836.In recent decades, the complex has undergone important restoration works that have helped recover its historical, artistic and architectural value. Its location, overlooking a meander of the Deza River, makes the visit a unique experience where history, architecture and landscape merge in one of the most impressive heritage sites in inland Galicia.
