Category Historic bridge

The Ponte de Sarandón Bridge is a historic feature within the fluvial landscape of the River Ulla, located on the boundary between the municipalities of A Estrada (Pontevedra) and Vedra (A Coruña). Its presence has been documented since the Middle Ages, when a crossing already existed at this strategic point, forming part of the ancient communication routes that connected inland Galician regions and facilitated the movement of people, goods and pilgrims.

Over the centuries, the bridge experienced periods of destruction and abandonment due to frequent flooding that seriously damaged its structure. During the time it remained in ruins, the crossing of the Ulla at this point was carried out by boats transporting travellers and goods from one riverbank to the other. This situation reflects the difficulties that for centuries affected communications in the Galician territory and highlights the importance of restoring a stable crossing for everyday life and for the development of both sides of the river.

The decisive reconstruction of the bridge took place between 1926 and 1929, under the direction of the engineer Manuel Espárrago Fernández. This work definitively consolidated the connection between the municipalities of A Estrada and Vedra. Today, the Sarandón Bridge not only fulfils an essential function of communication between both banks of the river, but also acts as a symbol of the historical evolution of transport and communications in Galicia.

Integrated into a fluvial landscape of great scenic value, the bridge is an ideal place to understand the transition from the medieval river crossings of the past to modern infrastructures, while enjoying the landscape of the Ulla valley.
