Ponte dos Cabalos Bridge

Río Arnego, Laxosa, Gurgueiro (San Miguel)
Category Historic bridge

The medieval bridge that crosses the River Arnego between the municipalities of Lalín and Agolada is one of the most significant historic constructions for communication between the Deza region and the Ulla basin. From its strategic location, this crossing allowed travellers to overcome the river and connect territories that for centuries depended on such passages for the movement of people, goods and livestock.

The structure dates back to the year 970. Its main purpose was to facilitate communication at a time when roads and bridges were essential for the economic and social organisation of the territory. Over time, this bridge became a key point within the traditional routes that connected different areas of inland Galicia.

From a construction perspective, the bridge features two semicircular arches that support a flat deck made of large stone slabs. This design, in addition to being resistant, allowed for safe passage over the river even during periods of flooding. These elements demonstrate the solidity and simplicity of medieval engineering, conceived to ensure durability and functionality, which has allowed the bridge to survive to the present day.

Integrated into the fluvial landscape of the River Arnego, the bridge today stands as a place of great historical and scenic interest, where nature, tradition and the memory of the territory come together.
