Virgin’s Path

Chantada, Lugo
Category

The Virgin’s Path forms one of the most distinctive sections of the Camiño de Inverno of the Camino de Santiago between Chantada and Rodeiro. This route crosses the Serra do Faro and, in its final ascending stretch, leads pilgrims towards the Hermitage of Nosa Señora do Faro, located at more than 1,000 metres above sea level, in an open mountain landscape that enhances the sense of ascent and spirituality of the place. The hermitage, which has been a pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages, makes this section not only a physical challenge but also a route of deep spiritual and devotional tradition.

The so-called “Camino de la Virgen” takes the form of a Stations of the Cross route of about 300 metres, marked by granite crosses that devotees traditionally walk, sometimes even on their knees, as a sign of devotion to the Virgin of O Faro. The path is signposted and easily recognised along the stage, marking the ascent to the sacred site beside the Marian shrine. Although it is not officially listed as an independent trail, it forms part of the religious tradition and pilgrimage practice experienced every year in this area, especially around 8 September, during the pilgrimage festival in honour of the Virgin.

Beyond its spiritual dimension, the Virgin’s Path offers pilgrims spectacular panoramic views of inland Galicia, allowing them to appreciate the wide landscapes of the region. Walking this path combines effort, scenery and tradition, offering a particularly intense experience within the Winter Way, in a setting where nature and spirituality meet.
