Church of Santa María de Rubín

Rúa 8, 4A, A Estrada
Category Church

The church of Santa María de Rubín, located in the parish of Lamas, is a temple that combines structural sobriety with decorative elements of interest. Its main façade features a lintelled doorway framed by stepped mouldings. Above it are windows with outward splaying, and the whole is crowned with lateral pinnacles and a central double-bell gable, creating a balanced silhouette representative of rural religious architecture.

The building has two side chapels, one on each side of the nave, which expand the devotional space of the church. On the north side there is another lintelled doorway with mouldings, next to which stands the sacristy attached to the chancel. Beneath the eaves, four carved corbels and decorative rosettes stand out, adding artistic interest to the exterior. The church was restored in 2001, an intervention that has helped preserve it in good condition.

According to Pedro Varela, the parish benefice was under the patronage of Vicente Valderrama, who had previously founded a chapel on this site. The parish archive dates back to 1648, when Rubín was a dependency of Lamas and the place of Berbigueira belonged to the parish “fábrica” (church estate), reflecting the historical continuity of this parish and its role in the religious and social life of the area.
