Hermitage and Wayside Cross of San Roque

Puxallos, 19
Category Sanctuary / Hermitage

The Hermitage of San Roque, located in the place of Puxallos, in the municipality of Lalín, is a small rural chapel that forms part of the traditional landscape of inland Galicia and lies along the historic route of the Via de la Plata of the Camino de Santiago. The building has a simple and functional structure, with a rectangular floor plan and walls built with granite masonry and ashlar. It features a four-sided tiled roof and an open porch supported by stone columns that protects the main entrance. Its typology corresponds to rural chapels linked to parish life and local celebrations, blending naturally with the surrounding agricultural and village environment.

Near the hermitage stands a granite stone cross (cruceiro), a characteristic element of Galician popular religious tradition. The cross has a sober structure with a stepped base, a monolithic shaft and a simple upper cross with little ornamentation, reinforcing its devotional and symbolic role as a place of prayer and a landmark along the Camino. Such elements traditionally marked places of passage, parish boundaries or sites associated with religious traditions and pilgrimages.

The combined presence of the hermitage and the stone cross, located in an open space arranged as a resting and meeting area for local residents, enhances the cultural and heritage value of the site within the historic Jacobean routes. Its position along the Via de la Plata route also adds a historical dimension related to the passage of pilgrims, keeping alive the connection between spirituality, territory and tradition in the rural landscape of Lalín.
