Pendellos da Gouxa

Bidueiros (Santa María)
Category Ethnographic complex

The Pendellos da Gouxa are a group of 18th-century structures associated with traditional fairs and markets, designed to provide shelter and space for displaying goods. This type of architecture developed in Galicia at strategic locations linked to the intersection of roads, as is the case in A Gouxa, a meeting point for routes coming from O Ribeiro, Ourense and Oseira. Their origin is closely connected to the historical commercial activity of the area and to the influence of the nearby Monastery of Oseira, which exercised jurisdiction over this territory for centuries.

The original complex of pendellos suffered significant losses between 1950 and 1960 due to the construction of new buildings, although the remaining structures are still functional and continue to be used during fair days. They are arranged in a linear layout parallel to the road. The construction combines stone at the rear, with small openings, and an open front used as a display space, where large stone blocks serve as counters and shelves for placing products. The roof is supported by a side wall and beams resting on stone columns, reflecting a simple and functional design adapted to commerce and rural life.

Today, the Pendellos da Gouxa maintain their social and cultural role, serving as the setting for fairs held on the 11th and 23rd of every month. Particularly noteworthy is the Festa da Carne ao Caldeiro e da Bóla con Torresmos, held on the first Sunday of June since 1994, where visitors can taste traditional dishes in an atmosphere that combines gastronomy with popular tradition.

The Pendellos da Gouxa represent a significant example of traditional Galician commercial architecture and of the important role that fairs have played in rural social life, keeping alive a historic space that continues to be a meeting point for both residents and visitors.
